The Sachs Scholarship at Princeton: Purposes & Organization

In addition to providing for its traditional scholarships for graduating seniors of Princeton University, the Sachs Scholarship Fund may be used to award scholarships for study at Princeton University to students from universities outside the United States. This document states the basic purposes and organization of such Daniel M. Sachs Scholarships at Princeton University. It does not amend or require any amendment to the Sachs Scholarship governance document of September 26, 1996.

Sachs Scholars at Princeton University are expected to share the same qualities, values, and commitment to public service traditionally associated with the Scholarship. Upon successful completion of their tenure, Sachs Scholars at Princeton will enter the Sachs community on equal terms with all Sachs Scholars, including enjoying rights to participate in the Board of Advisors and in future selection committees.

A Selection Committee composed of Advisors and other individuals deemed suitable by the Executive Committee will be formed to nominate each new Scholar. The Selection Committee will endeavor to follow, as circumstances permit, the same methods and principles used on all Sachs Scholarship Selection Committees.

Each Sachs Scholarship at Princeton will be offered and awarded according to the terms of a designated Prospectus. The Executive Committee will submit, and the Advisors will approve any new Prospectus under which a Sachs Scholarship at Princeton may be offered. The Prospectus will specify the nature and duration of the courses that may be pursued at Princeton under the Scholarship, the value and conditions of the award, and the criteria of eligibility.

In keeping with the history of the Sachs Scholarship, the first such Prospectus will call for the creation of a Sachs Scholarship at Princeton for students from Worcester College, Oxford. The Sachs Scholarship at Princeton from Worcester College will be available to graduating Worcester seniors, recent graduates, and postgraduate students at Worcester College. It will provide tuition, fees, and a living stipend for one year as a Visiting Student, or one year in a degree program, in any department of the Graduate School at Princeton.

To the extent that funds become available and/or circumstances change, future Prospectuses for Sachs Scholarships at Princeton may involve expanded criteria of eligibility and different awards, provided that they remain consistent with the original purposes of the Sachs Scholarship. It is expected that the Sachs Scholarship at Princeton from Worcester as well as any additional scholarships will be contemplated and sustained only to the extent that the funding for the existing scholarships remains secure.
